Summary

The Eastern Rhodopes have a hugely diverse birding scene and local entrepreneurs create incredible nature adventures; Bulgarian’s nature scene has long been overshadowed by the neighbouring countries like Greece and Croatia, but it’s got both a vibrant history and a flourishing present. Visit the following to discover the amazing variety of birds in Sakar and Eastern Rhodope mountains. Here’s where you can experience authentic Rhodope cooking, whether that be traditional or contemporary, being Bulgarian mixed with Oriental cuisine.

Natural Pleasures

The Eastern Rhodope’s sky is crowded with birds of prey which makes it one of the world’s most overwhelmingly green destinations. The mountains are blessed with a large number of bucolic countryside areas, and the reservoir Studen kladenets and river Arda are just minutes away from the accommodations, just like the bird watching points and forests.

Culinary Experience

Once known only for potato and tobacco growing, Eastern Rhodope & Sakar’s culinary scene is currently enjoying a Mediterranean moment in the sun, and has become a culinary destination in its own right. This delicious move takes in everything from the most traditional “mehana” restaurants to the local pubs “krachma”, or favourite “ho-re-mags” in small villages. The local taste of the traditional pastry “banitsa”, or “cheverme” (roasted whole lamb) is definitely incomparable.

More about Bulgaria Discover Bulgaria

Bulgaria occupies a strategic location in the Balkans, locked between the Black Sea and the Danube river. Since Ancient times, the country has served as a major crossroad between Europe, Asia and Africa. It is the oldest land in Europe that rose from the warm sea more than 35 million years ago. Rocks, caves and biodiversity in Bulgaria rank as one of the best in Europe.

More about Eastern Rhodope Discover Eastern Rhodope

The Eastern Rhodopes are a truly mosaic of various landscapes – grasslands, waterlands, deciduous woods, coniferous forest and rocky cliffs. Our nature areas have particular habitats for plants, birds and animals offering unique opportunities for wildlife observation.

More about Sakar Discover Sakar

The nature routes of Sakar bring you to the best and most unscathed parts of the mountain where birds are the main attraction. The greatest attraction is the healthy population of the majestic Eastern Imperial Eagle, as well as the good number of Lesser Kestrel.
